Svarti foss, basalt column beach and the 🌋 volcano

Image
The days flew by, ready or not we had to start our 500km journey from Hofn to the BB hotel near KEF airport. Thankfully, road trips in Iceland are anything but dull and tiring with a continuous and changing scenery to admire. Speed limits are no more than 90km (55 miles) per hour on a single lane road. Apart from safety, this allows drivers and passengers to go slow and soak it all in.  From the car window  Our S2 loop hike to the Svarti foss, a part of the larger Vatnajokulspjodgardur national park was a 3 mile round trip. With a majestic backdrop of shaded brown, black and grey basalt columns the Svarti foss were nothing like any of the umpteen other waterfalls in Iceland. That being said, each one was unique and characteristic and it would be unfair to pick any one as the prettiest. The basalt columns are a result of the lava or magma cooling and the resulting contraction causes the new rock to form six sided columns.  Svarti foss against the basalt columns Chinmay did...

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon Zodiac boat tour

Image
We drove back an hour to the Jokulsarlon ice berg lagoon for the zodiac boat tour. With the big warm overalls the Ice Berg lagoon tour company had us put on, it felt like all 19 astronauts were ready for their space walk.  The zodiac boat zipping through the iceberg lagoon  Amazing calving serrations on an iceberg  Nature’s sculptures The astronaut gang  We were divided in 2 boats, the joy ride on the inflatable speedy boats  🚤  with Tamara took us up close to the floating ice bergs. Our suits helped keep us warm and enjoy the surreal experience comfortably despite the frigid wind. They were actually meant for safety and survival in case of accidental falls into the ice cold lagoon which still didn’t guarantee death from a heart attack, we were casually informed! We were envious of Tamara’s job and rightfully so. She and her colleagues get to come to this “office” and marvel at the ephemeral and ever floating pieces of beauty which impart a completely diff...

Skaftafell Glacier Hike and the drive to Hofn

Image
We would have loved to stay longer in the quaint town of Vik, will definitely be on our next Iceland itinerary. A quick stop at the church helped us admire how tiny this town of 750 people actually was and understandably so. Why would anyone want to build in a place that is constantly threatened by an active volcano waiting to erupt any minute and drowning it with the resulting tsunami like floods!  Good bye Vik A quick drive by the iconic church of Vik Vik in it’s entirety  The Skaftafelljokut outlet is one of the most accessible of the 30 outlets of the expensive Vatnajokull glacier. The private hiking tour with our Czech guides, Alishka and Borris Troll Expeditions was an easy 3.4 miles, yet an exciting experience. The crampons were different and sturdier than the Katla Ice Cave tour and putting them on involved a step by step tutorial despite which most of us needed help. We couldn’t have enough of the view of the glacier and the postcard perfect surroundings on a clear bl...

Katla Ice Cave Tour

Another relaxing later start to the morning in this pristine quite town and the cumulative carb overload for the past few days called for an outdoor run. The drizzle  🌧  failed to deter me from the refreshing run with a few stops to admire my running companions- the moss covered green cliffs, the church and a few scattered homes/hotels.   Vik  Morning run  Kahan and I went slightly overboard at the supermarket Kronan across the street from our apartments.  He was excited to jump the patio and run to the Kronan supermarket across!  We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at the Soup Company. Kahan’s nacho bowl was packed with delicious flavors and so was Chinmay’s grilled falafel salad with tiny falafel patties on a bed of greens and a few pieces of cheese. My pesto tomato panini was alright and while I didn’t care for the Thai noodle soup, Kahan liked it. The cream of mushroom soup was delicious even for someone like me who doesn’t care for mushrooms much. Yu...
