Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon Zodiac boat tour

We drove back an hour to the Jokulsarlon ice berg lagoon for the zodiac boat tour. With the big warm overalls the Ice Berg lagoon tour company had us put on, it felt like all 19 astronauts were ready for their space walk.

We were divided in 2 boats, the joy ride on the inflatable speedy boats 🚤 with Tamara took us up close to the floating ice bergs. Our suits helped keep us warm and enjoy the surreal experience comfortably despite the frigid wind. They were actually meant for safety and survival in case of accidental falls into the ice cold lagoon which still didn’t guarantee death from a heart attack, we were casually informed! We were envious of Tamara’s job and rightfully so. She and her colleagues get to come to this “office” and marvel at the ephemeral and ever floating pieces of beauty which impart a completely different view to the landscape every day. We got very close to one of the outlets of the Vatnajokull glacier, that gives birth to the ice bergs in this brackish lagoon. The salt from the ocean water expedites the melting of the ice bergs while new ones continue forming and morphing. What an incredible natural phenomenon, and we are so blessed to have encountered it in a thrilling boat ride.

Vegan hot dogs 🌭from the food stand in the parking lot was lunch for most of us and they didn’t disappoint at all with the sautéed veggies (which could use some salt) and fried onions. It was also a parting lunch as Kapadias would leave right after. Good byes are never easy, however the potential to see each other again in India this December and discussions about the possible trips Bhavya, Parishi and Anya could take between UK and the US next year made them alright. Besides, we had managed to pack many sweet memories of a vacation of a life time.

We went on to another ice lagoon- the  Fjallsarlon lagoon very close to another couple of glacier outlets. Marveling at the beauty of the iceberg dotted lagoon against the glaciers in the backdrop with a  the clear blue sky as the roof and soaking in it’s entirety, we walked up and down the hill.

The consensus in the group honoring the kids’ wishes was to spend the rest of the evening in Hofn. The kids got to take it easy and walk around, and pick up some yummy crepes from the crepe stand across the street. And the adults got to relax and explore the bay front. I had enough time to squeeze in a very refreshing and much needed 5K run on the shore.

While Chinmay had to stay put in the room with emed on 3 devices for the travel mandatory COVID tests, I joined the rest of our friends for a drive to the black sand beach by the Viking cafe and got some photo-ops by the props left behind from a movie scene in the past. Chinmay and I shared a pizza and a decadent beet burger 🍔 for dinner with friends at the Z-Bistro in Hofn. By now we had learnt to make peace with long wait times for meals at some of these restaurants!
