What could be better than a “family spa day” after a 13 hour plane ride across continents? The simple answer is the big blue warm lagoon with geothermal water 15 minutes from the KEF airport! As touristy as it may appear, it is a perfect way to unwind and get into the vacation spirit. Treading the soothing warm waters of the Blue Lagoon on a clear Icelandic day, going from the mineral mask station to the drink station, engaging in banter and great laughs with friends and a few pictures along the way helped kickstart our Icelandic adventure. They have figured out ways to keep their guests in their premises for a few hours with the sequential face masks (the better kind), hot water fall, sauna and a giant lagoon people can hang out in wandering all over

We were all overly relaxed and so ready to crash at our home for the next 4 days- Reykjavik Residence hotel. We had at least a couple of hours of siesta time before the city walking tour in the evening. Our tour guide Nanna took us around various parts of downtown Reykjavik sharing some historical pearls and interesting facts and stories about this capital city. She didn’t seem to mind the interruptions from at times crazy kids, Gelato/hot chocolate stops and several photo-ops in our big group. The first settler came to Iceland in the late 9th century. Fishing and tourism are the top sources of livelihood in this country of 360,000 inhabitants, 80-90% of who have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

We were all famished and ready for some delicious pizza carb load after walking several miles across town to Flateys. They were gracious enough to accommodate us all with pretty prompt and efficient service. It was a beautiful relaxing first day, and perfectly pleasant weather, the 10.30pm sunlight  livening up our 2km stroll back to the hotel. The kids had been reveling in the company of their friends throughout the day, and we were all happy this was just the beginning of an epic adventure!
